All Aboard!

So, the Tories want us to give auld Queenie a yacht for her diamond jubilee this year then?

Brilliant news to wake up to eh? Especially since I kept reading the headline as they want to 'Give a diamond yacht for her jubilee'. Though lets be honest, it may aswell be diamond encrusted  if any such proposal goes through, as its likely to cost the taxpayer 60million quid.

Yep, we'd  be forking out for it, us....the same folk who are being told to tighten the purse strings every day by this increasingly insufferable Tory government who clearly have no grip on reality if any of their ministers think that it's in any way ok to even suggest something like this. Apparently we're in the middle of a recession - the worst seen since the 1930's, we're told this every day, we're told everyone has to take a bit of a hit due to the global banking crisis (which was never our fault to begin with), we just need to grin & bear it cause that's the way it is. Oh but we can afford a yacht for the Royals can we?

Think about it, how many young people would that 60million put through Uni with their brand spanking new 9k a year fees in place down south now because we cant possibly afford to subsidise higher education in any way?

60million quid....what could the NHS do with that kinda cash? We'll never know cause we cant afford to give them even a wee bit more to find out.

60 million pounds! How many of those 'ferile youths' of last summers riots could have their lifes completely transformed (through many, many different avenues) with 60million quid? Who cares, throw them in jail for knocking a bottle a lucozade - that'll sort out the underlying issues there eh?!

How many jobs could be saved? How many schools budgets could be saved? How many public sector pensions could be covered? How many of the hundreds of thousands of wee tiny kids living below the poverty bracket could be helped......I could go on & on.

But heyyy, who cares about all that other stuff when the obvious answer to all our problems is to raise 'national spirits' by spending tens of millions of our cash on an outdated and horribly elitist tradition for the 2nd year running on top the millions we already pay for their upkeep. Regardless of whether the yacht idea gets picked up, its almost guaranteed that this Jubliee will have millions spent on it.

And NO, that Royal Wedding was not a proud day to be British, English, Scottish, Northern Irish or Welsh - I mean, good luck to them as a couple & all that but why was I paying for their wedding?  Why will I be paying for this yacht?! Do I get a wee shot of it? Nah, didnt think so - yet every penny of tax YOU will ever pay in your entire lifetime won't even begin to scrape the surface of either of these things.

And all this in the name of raising 'national spirits' - oh good, thanks for that - we might have got depressed otherwise. This idea is, quite frankly, pretty insulting. Even more so is the fact that there are thousands of these royalist idiots completely brainwashed into believing that these people deserve this obscene privilege, deserve our respect & deserve oooor money just simply by being born. People actually buy into this.

Lets face it, these are unelected aristocratic officials subsidised by an archaic system that just shouldn't be relevant any more - we should be protesting, not celebrating.

I know the nay sayers will say "What about all the money they bring in through tourism?" - Nonsense! People wouldn't stop coming to Britain if we didn't have them, we'd still have the hertitage & the history - but it would be precisely that - HISTORY! People dont stop going to Egypt to see the pyramids 'cause Cleopatra isn't kickin about anymore do they?

Plenty of European countries still have a Royal family who arent publically funded in this way - they are an aristocratic class - if we must have them, let them pay their own way and certainly don't allow them to be the head of state - why should they just automatically be given this kind of power, influence & privilege?

Getting rid a them once & for all would also allow us to get rid of the House of Lords and probably allow us to move towards a more secular state given that the Queen is simultaneously head of state and head of the Church - in a vastly multicultured country - why is there not a bigger deal made of how ridiculously arrogant this is as a system? We really should be done with it as soon as auld Liz snuffs it but no chance of that now that Wills & Kate are the nations new sweethearts. Here's to another generation of pompous arrogance and subsidised elitism then.......
